What Darkness Keeps
Work/Short Films/What Darkness Keeps
For Arthur Vane, keeping the lost property archive beneath Nexo station permanently lit is a defence against darkness. When the lights fail, smoke and embers take creature form and enter from the tunnels.
Behind the story
Why I made it
I approach loss through the care given to what others leave behind: Arthur has spent thirty years tending lost possessions while fearing the darkness around his daily work. In a station rendered in ink and washes on paper, I preserve each object's colour, allowing individual belongings to retain their identity among the shelves.
The world
I give Nexo station the texture of a remembered place, drawing its glass and iron roof and underground archive in ink and washes on paper. Gas lamps reveal bottle green shelves, brass fittings and rust red objects; the visibly drawn surfaces anchor a city whose calendar remains deliberately unstated.
The characters
Every character enters the story with a life already underway, expressed in their identity and visual design.
