Everybody Sleeps at Nine
Work/Short Films/Everybody Sleeps at Nine
Care goes unseen in Ash Hollow, where Marlow patrols through the residents' nightly supernatural sleep. After twenty-six years of solitary rounds among unconscious neighbours, a young woman awake on a bench interrupts his isolation.
Behind the story
Why I made it
I explore the loneliness of care through Marlow, whose neighbours remain safe without ever seeing him work. A hot griddle, an open window and a razor left in a hand make that responsibility tangible, while the arrival of someone who needs his experience gives his unrecognised labour the possibility of being seen.
The world
I place the supernatural within the working familiarity of Ash Hollow, a small American town of diner, barber shop and hardware store. Warm streetlights fall on motionless residents as low fog gathers outside, while a jukebox shares the scene with room noise and footsteps: ordinary life retains its sounds beneath the stillness.
The characters
Every character enters the story with a life already underway, expressed in their identity and visual design.
