Devotion keeps Torca, a tiny luck-bringing animal, beside her owner in a hospital room. As Nela's condition worsens, strangers gather below her window, watching and waiting for their chance to come upstairs.
Behind the story
Why I made it
I begin with the quiet persistence of attachment, as Torca stays beside a woman hospitalised for years and a night orderly attends to everyday care. Ink contours, flat colour and painted backgrounds give my animation its drawing language, keeping the hospital recognisable while a small animal brings fantasy into that familiar space.
The world
I give an old public hospital in an unnamed European city a restrained visual language: green grey walls and bedding face wet black streets beyond the window. Amber belongs to the small creatures and the monitor, while ink outlines, flat colour, painted backgrounds and paper grain preserve the drawn image through measured camera movement.
The characters
Torca
Small creature beside her owner. Small enough to fit a hand, Torca rests on Nela's chest, an amber animal with a split ear whose devotion centres on one more night together.
Nela Arbide
Patient on the fourth floor. At forty-one, Nela has spent twenty-two years in her hospital room. She hopes for the reassurance of an ordinary night, with Torca close beside her.
Ras Moray
Hospital orderly on night duty. At forty-four, Ras knows the ward through six years of night work. Finishing his round and tending to Nela's daily care shape his immediate responsibilities.
