Set Him Down
Work/Short Films/Set Him Down
Keeping her mortally wounded husband alive has become a journey without rest for Maud, who guides his blind creature through a peat bog. After twelve years walking, exhaustion weighs on every passage.
Behind the story
Why I made it
I explore a marriage through the effort of continuing together: Maud and Cadoc still get along, though their daily walking grows harder. Fantasy makes that commitment physical in a woman guiding a blind animal with her husband on its back, while their short, practical conversations preserve the familiarity beneath an exhausting routine.
The world
I root the fantasy in the physical demands of a peat bog, where Maud and Cadoc's marriage takes shape through long walks, wet ground and an animal carrying a human body. The mythology belongs to this landscape, while short exchanges and Cadoc's restrained humour give daily endurance the intimacy of a shared life.
The characters
Maud Sarn
Wife guiding a blind creature. Once her husband's partner in cutting peat, Maud now measures devotion in walking. After twelve years, her failing knees threaten the effort of keeping him alive.
Cadoc Sarn
Husband carried across the bog. After twelve years on the creature's back, Cadoc wants Maud to put him down. Yet his concern for her extends to the life beyond their shared routine.
Tobin Vell
Brother seeking help for Nessa. Hunger and the fear of arriving too late accompany Tobin into the bog. He has walked for three days, carrying his sister in a cart and seeking help.
