Behind the story

Why I made it

For an athlete accustomed to being judged by results, needing help can expose a deeper vulnerability than physical pain. Through Denis's treatment for a knee injury, I wanted to explore effort that no longer feels easy to measure, with frustration held in ordinary movements and repeated exercises. Rehabilitation gives that struggle a human scale: being seen at the moment control becomes difficult.

The world

Recovery shapes the everyday world of this sports romance, between a municipal pool and an insurer's rehabilitation clinic in an unnamed large city. I keep the physical effort close through rooms smelling of disinfectant and rubber, where appointments, repeated exercises and professional paperwork organise the day. These routines give tangible form to an injured athlete's restricted choices.

The characters

Denis Cambra

Injured competitive breaststroke swimmer. Denis has built years of disciplined training around a qualifying race. With his injured knee requiring rehabilitation, the loss of that precise routine becomes a source of frustration.

Ossian Beltrán

Physiotherapist at an insurer’s clinic. Ossian's quiet attention remains governed by professional responsibility. Treating patients referred through the insurer, he counts their repetitions while reading the effort in their faces.

Amadeo Quiroga

Denis’s longtime swimming coach. Amadeo's connection to Denis reaches back to teaching him pool turns at eleven. Still coaching young swimmers at the same club, he embodies the continuity of that training.
