La Isla Arcana
Work/Vertical Series/La Isla Arcana
Privilege meets unpredictable power at a magic academy on a fogbound island. A scholarship student's uncontrolled magic interrupts an heir's display, before a public ceremony unexpectedly binds the two young men as a pair.
Behind the story
Why I made it
The inequalities between scholarship students and established families gave La Isla Arcana its place among four other romances between men I developed alongside it. Using the preparation process tested on Punto Ciego, I gave each series its own cast and setting. Here, I wrote for viewers aged 18 to 35 drawn to gothic schools and fantasy, placing privilege within the experience of belonging.
The world
At Aldergate academy on fogbound Hollowmere, I make privilege visible through the meeting of gothic school architecture and coastal folk horror. Old gold, wet marble and candlelit symmetry embody wealth, while scholarship students gather around worn wood and oil lamps, salt lodged in the furniture's joints. The island's atmosphere holds social inequality within its most tangible surfaces.
The characters
Every character enters the story with a life already underway, expressed in their identity and visual design.
