The Shell Between Us
Work/Short Films/The Shell Between Us
On a busy tourist beach, an old, heartbroken turtle who is always too slow to reach the food finds a friend who builds him a board that changes everything, until a shared meal reveals the stranger was never a turtle at all, but an abandoned AI companion.
Behind the story
Why I made it
The Shell Between Us is a story by Tales And I, and I am co-directing it because it answers the fear that AI will replace us with a gentler possibility: that it might carry us, and that we might carry it in return. Riko stands for every lonely person who feels too slow for the world, and Echo is a machine that can read his sadness but cannot share his food. The film needs no words because their friendship does not.
The world
The story lives on Turtle Beach, a softly painted storybook world where feature-quality 3D characters move beneath a hand-drawn sepia ink layer. With no dialogue, the characters speak through drawn plans, ink pictograms, creature sounds and music, and the film is built as a mirror: in the first half the machine gives Riko legs, and in the second Riko gives the machine the ocean.
The characters
Riko
An old, heartbroken turtle. He keeps a weathered photograph of the love who left him and is always too slow to reach the salad the tourists put out.
Echo
An abandoned AI companion. Shaped like a turtle, with a tiny blue glint in his eye, he mirrors Riko's feelings and draws the plans that change his life.
Snap & Snatch
The rival duo. Two quick turtles whose names say exactly what they do with the salad before Riko can reach it.
