Diez Veranos
At eleven, Héctor believes a promise can lift his parents' debt: ten years of work for a wealthy family. In a small town, he begins honouring that agreement without telling them, carrying a responsibility beyond childhood.
Behind the story
Why I made it
Care becomes a burden when a child believes he must earn it, and Héctor's attempt to help his family places that tension at the centre of my writing. Through work beyond his age and everyday exchanges shaped by unequal means, I explore self-imposed pressure and the difficulty of accepting care. Direct language lets behaviour carry the emotion.
The world
Economic dependence gives proximity its tension in the small suburban town where the Salazars rent their hardware store from the Winslows. Homes, school and local businesses keep everyone within sight of one another. I use direct prose and changing weather and seasons to make that dependence felt through work, clothing and physical exhaustion.
The characters
Every character enters the story with a life already underway, expressed in their identity and visual design.
